Lifestyle

I bet you have an idea of the kind of lifestyle you’d like to have. It could be the polar opposite to the lifestyle you have now. Or it might not be all that different. If your lifestyle doesn’t afford you the time, experiences or luxuries you’d like, it may be that you need a radical overhaul in the way you live, and the way you think about life. But you might feel like you’re stuck in a rut and don’t know where to start; or how to change.

We each have a view of ourselves we’d like the world to see. We want to be seen as successful, popular, intelligent, benevolent, wealthy, adventurous, cool and attractive – to a lesser or greater degree. We see other people who have these qualities and attributes and we aspire to that lifestyle.

Problem is; we are all subject to the same constraints: time and money. An abundance of both can get you the lifestyle you seek. Little of either can leave you feeling trapped. Sometimes an affluent lifestyle can feel like a trap too. Especially if you pursue wealth simply to nurture that lifestyle.

So what kind of lifestyle do you aspire to? Do you long to be care free and time rich? Perhaps you want to be wealthy enough that you don’t need to work… so you can spend your time in the pursuit of a hobby, dream or travel goal. Maybe you want enough money so that you can buy the big ‘statement’ house, put a German car on your drive, wear the finest clothes and have the latest of everything. You want to feel like you’ve ‘arrived’ – and for others to see that too.

Maybe you just want to learn how to create more free time for yourself, so that you can spend it with family and friends, kicking back laughing, enjoying and indulging yourself without guilt.

Or perhaps the ‘exact opposite of now’ is the lifestyle you seek. You want change. A change of scenery and surroundings. To be a different version of yourself somewhere else. Maybe you yearn to travel the world as a wealthy nomad. You want to sell up and downsize. Seek adventure overseas. Somewhere your Australian dollar stretches three times as far as it does here. Maybe you’d like to experience what it’s like to travel to and live in a part of the world you’ve only read about in holiday brochures.

Whatever lifestyle you want, understand that it’s your dream, not anyone else’s. If you spend too much time trying to rationalise or justify it to other people, you’ll talk yourself out of trying to achieve it. Then you’ll be in the same situation ten years down the line wondering where the time went.

The Escapologist will show you how to you can have the kind of lifestyle you aspire to; regardless of whether you want more money, time, travel, status – or just something different from ‘this’…

Distrust Thyself

‘Know yourself’ becomes ‘Distrust yourself’, my philosophy professor says to my class on Monday night. This transformation might be hard for us in the 21st century to understand at first. Free Will: What Choice Do I Have?

Are your actions really yours? Do you have free will? ‘Sure,’ I hear you say. ‘What choice do I have?’ The classical thinkers were fascinated by the question of choice or determinism.
